• Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral (MnCO₃) — the pink to deep red colouration is intrinsic to its manganese content rather than a trace element, making it one of the few minerals where the primary element directly produces the colour
• The characteristic banding forms during successive growth stages in hydrothermal veins, with each band representing a distinct period of mineral deposition
• Argentina is the most notable source of the strongly banded material most associated with rhodochrosite, though quality material also comes from Peru, South Africa, and Colorado
• Rhodochrosite sits at Mohs 3.5–4 — handle with care and keep away from harder stones to avoid surface damage
