Raw Opal Crystal Specimen - Ethiopia - D
An Ethiopian opal specimen from Ethiopia. Look for the play of colour and soft glow.
Stone Facts:
- Opal is hydrated silica: tiny spheres of silica stacked in a regular pattern diffract light, creating flashes of colour known as play-of-colour
- Most Ethiopian opal comes from the Wollo (Welo) region and is hydrophane, meaning it can absorb water and temporarily turn clear or lose its colour play until it dries
- It sits at Mohs 5.5–6.5; keep it away from water, oils and sudden temperature changes
Traditional & Folklore Properties:
- Opal takes its name from the Sanskrit upala, meaning precious stone, and is traditionally associated with creativity and inspiration
- Traditional associations: in crystal tradition, linked with the Crown chakra and Libra and Cancer (shared as folklore, not as a claim of any effect)
